withinbloodAfter her father disappeared yet again, Amelia moved herself and her daughter far away out to Arizona to keep them hidden from demons that might come looking to use them as Winchester or Angel bait again. Out there they weren't disturbed much by the events taking place in the midwest, but Claire's mother learned how to keep track of the omens to make sure none came their way. Every electrical storm was a nightmare at their house as they waited, locked in the bathroom with a line of salt in front of the door for the inevitable....but nothing ever came for them and after a few years Claire and her mom went back to a somewhat normal life. Everything they had from the past was cut out much to Claire's protest and her relationship with her mother started to become rocky when Amelia had her husband declared dead after Claire turned 15.
In high school Claire and her mother became even more strained as Amelia's resolution to move on from all memories of Jimmy conflicted with Claire's own to someday find her father. Claire's memory of the Winchester boys drove her to try and seek out more Hunter's like them, but it was difficult to find many people connected to the occult in Sun City, Arizona and for a long time she gave up the search for information about angels and demons...until she turned seventeen and her mom became engaged to their local churches minister. Claire didn't have a problem with Pastor Joe, but the fact he was going to be her mother's husband, that he was going to be her step father and hell just the fact his name started with a J made her silently resent him.
To further rebel from her mothers wishes and to fill the place that was left empty in her when her father disappeared, Claire began to seek out those who were like the men who had come into town with her father all those years ago. In college she majored in Religious Studies and researched heavly into demonic and angelic possession. Through the course of her research into angelic possessions she met a man named Alex, whose wife Nicole had disappeared the same way as her father and later was found killed in the middle of a highway. He and a small group of people with similiar experiences began looking into accounts of possession through the United States and though most turned out to be demonic the small band would exorcise whatever came their way, Claire learning alongside the more experienced of them. Claire did not stay long in college because of this, dropping out after a year and a half and running away from home to join the small band of exorcists.
Everything went smoothly for awhile. There was a married couple, Joshua and May Carpenter and a boy named Matthew her own age also in training that made up the merry band. With the demons and angels war long since over, they never much caught a wiff of angelic activity though they had their fair share of demon run ins. It was around the time during a particularly nasty demon hunt that Claire began to realize there was something wrong, terribly wrong with her. Her ability to exorcise demons became more intense, to the point she no longer needed to even speak the latin chants but think them and demons would be expelled from their hosts. This new found power came with crippling migraines and blackouts and a target painted right on her little blond head.
She was no longer hunting demons, but being hunted by them. The word spread quickly that there was something non human about the girl, the power alienated her from other hunters who saw her as possibly being something they'd look to put down on a working day. The isolation and suspicion began to harden the girls soft heart and finally steeled it solid when the unthinkable happened. Matthew was possessed and while under the demons thrall, killed Alex, the closest thing she had to a father without Jimmy. She managed to save Matthew and expel the demon, but knowing that these things would only continue to happen she abandoned him and the others and went her own way. Posing as a faith healer and a psychic and going under the pseudo name Marian.
